    Burning Palms Beach

    Royal National Park

    Beach

A remote surf beach deep in Royal National Park, famous for its small community of heritage shacks that have stood for over a century — a living piece of Australian coastal history. The 6km walk in from Otford along the Coast Track passes dramatic clifftops, wild heathland, and sweeping ocean views. The shacks are privately leased and occupied, giving the cove an off-grid community feel unlike anywhere else near Sydney. Strong surf makes swimming risky; come for the walk and the atmosphere.

    Getting There

Drive south to Otford via the Princes Motorway. Park at Otford and walk the Coast Track south for approximately 6km. There is no road access to the beach itself.

    Best Time to Visit

Late autumn and winter for comfortable walking temperatures and fewer people on the track. Spring for wildflowers on the heathland above.

    Tips

    • The Coast Track is one of NSW's great coastal walks — consider walking from Otford south and arranging a return via the Cronulla ferry from Bundeena
    • Carry at least 2 litres of water — no fresh water between Otford and Burning Palms
    • The heritage shacks are privately leased and inhabited — respect residents' privacy

    Entry & Facilities

National park entry fee applies. Parking at Otford (outside the park) is free.
