Lavender Bay
A lush, hand-built garden carved out of former railway land overlooking Lavender Bay, created over decades by artist Wendy Whiteley as a labour of love after the death of her husband, painter Brett Whiteley. Winding paths thread through densely planted native and exotic gardens, past sculptures and hidden seating, to spectacular views of the harbour. Free, open always, and still tended with obvious care. One of Sydney's most quietly magical places — beautiful at any time of day.
Train to Milsons Point or North Sydney, then walk 10 minutes to Lavender Bay. By car, park on Bay Road or Lavender Street. The garden entrance is on the foreshore beside the Lavender Bay wharf.
Year-round — the garden is beautiful in every season. Early morning for tranquil solitude before daytime visitors arrive. Autumn for falling leaves and intimate atmosphere.
Free. Always open.
