    Kid-Friendly

A sheltered, uncrowded beach at La Perouse near Botany Bay, with calm water ideal for families and an interesting historic context — the ruins of a quarantine station overlook the bay, and the nearby headland has Aboriginal middens and colonial fortifications. The beach is a short walk from the La Perouse Museum and Bare Island Fort, making it easy to combine a swim with some history. Far less busy than eastern suburbs beaches despite being just 20km from the CBD.

    Getting There

Drive south to La Perouse via Anzac Parade. The beach is a short walk from the La Perouse Museum and Bare Island car park. Bus 394 runs from Circular Quay to La Perouse.

    Best Time to Visit

Summer for swimming in the sheltered, calm bay. Weekdays are quieter than weekends. The beach is enjoyable year-round for walks and birdwatching.

    Tips

    • The Bare Island Fort is directly opposite the beach — guided tours run on weekends for a small fee
    • The La Perouse Museum tells the story of the French explorer who arrived in Botany Bay days after the First Fleet — fascinating context
    • The coastal walk around the headland to Henry Head Lighthouse is excellent
